ABSTRACT According the arrangement of the Chinese Meteorological Administration, the main task of our center is the on-the-job training. Based on the characters of China, for example, the meteorologists are much more than other countries, some methods are introduced in different training conditions.

Computer Aided Learning is first used in the on-the-job training. So far, We have developed two meteorological multimedia CD-ROMs, and will finish another CD-ROM on meteorological forecasters in China. Video- tapes on meteorology are also developed to help the on-the-job training, especially in the condition of concentrated training in district center of China. The

traditional method is remained in the condition of face to face training, but the teaching material is not the same as before. By using the combination of different training methods, the on-the-job training will further improved.

1. Introduction

Since the reformation in China, the modernization in meteorology is occurred, much new equipment is founded. Many new knowledge and new methods are needed to be trained. In this case, the Beijing Meteorology College is become to the Training Center of Chinese Meteorological Administration with the main task from graduation instruction to on-the-job training. There are two grade training center, the Training Center of Chinese Meteorological Administration, this is our unit, and the province training center. Different training center takes on different task. The main tasks of our unit are as follows:

1).Train the headship ones among the on-the job people ;

2).Train the teachers in the province training center;

3).Some big or great new engineering project, for example, the next radar;

4).Some new methods.

Based on the above tasks and the characters of China, for example, the meteorologists are much more than other countries and the netware condition is not so good, some methods are introduced in different training conditions.

2. The main Methods for Training

There are three main training methods in our center. Computer Aided Learning is first used in the on-the-job training. So far, We have developed two meteorological multimedia CD-ROM: squall-line and the data analysis and its application of the next-radar, and we will finish another CD-ROM on post training about the short-time weather forecasting in China. The multimedia

CD-ROM software is favor to self-learning persons. Being great interactivity, learners can learning initiative and can check themselves by doing the exams in the software. We plan to develop web-based software when the NetWare condition is present. This computer aided learning method is also our progressing way. This computer-aided learning is almost separately. The second method is to develop video- tapes on meteorology. We have developed two sets of videotapes on meteorology; the first one is about short time climate forecasting another one is about the short-time weather forecasting. The main purpose of the vide-tape is to help the teachers in the province training center. Of cause, persons can use it individually. The third one is the traditional method: face to face training, but the teaching material is not the same as before. It is replaced by computer aided materials as soon as possible. The main object is the training teacher in province training center and the on-the-job headship persons. This face to face training pattern is usually concentrated in our unit.

3. Further works

To meet the needs of the development in meteorology, the task of on-the- job training is very great. The concentrated type of training will became less and with the separately type increasing. The needs of the multimedia software on meteorology will greatly increase. We will first have a investigation on the need of the favor, then develop multimedia software both on CD-ROM and Web-based types in order to meet the different needs.
