Motivation
”@”@According to the latest conclusion of World Wide Web (WWW) usage questionnaire in Taiwan, the number one WWW user is the young student whose ratio is over 38%. This number is more than 10 times than the teacher users which only has 3% weighting (Institute for Information Industry, 1999). Although the WWW users in Taiwan is over 3 million until November of 1998 and over 200 CAI projects in universities from 1996 to 1998 (National Science Council, 1999), most people agree that CAI or CALMet programs are not so popular in Taiwan. Lin(1998) introduced CALMet idea and CAI samples to Taiwan Meteorological Society, but not much responses from instructors and students. The students complain no funny CAI projects accompanied with meteorological lessons. At the same time the instructors complain no support and training to make CAI programs easily. How to make usable meteorological CAI programs quickly in Taiwan is the major focus of this study.
”@”@Three facts stimulate the author”¦s new idea for creating meteorological CAI program in the past one year. One is the fact that most students are familiar with HTML browser environment and have experiments to make homeworks through WWW resources. Also more WWW-based courses were created in the world (Bozzelli and Ruffin, 1996) and in the campus of National Taiwan University (called Non-synchronous Courses Project). In stead of the window-interface softwares likes Delphi, Viutual Basic, Toolbook and so on, We believe that HTML document format could be more easily accessed, managed, integrated and maintained in a common database by students, instructors and system managers. The second one is the general argument from students who are boring at the plain text and 2-D pictures contents. Most people agree that visualization or animation is helpful to demonstrate knowledge or data information (National Science Foundation, 1987), and Compressed Disk (CD) media is a better choice for overcoming the slow file transformation problem in internet world. At the same time, the PC-based CD recorder (called CD-R later) is more popular and cheaper in the market. The third one is that HTML environment can plug-in media-play function automatically to deal with animation files. These facts come together to give the solution that ”umaking animate CAI program with HTML browser environment in CD media.”v
”@”@The lesson of ”uinstrumentation and measurement in atmospheric sciences”v taught by the author introduces the general meteorological observations and platforms used in the world for the freshman level. Many field experimental VHS cassettes were played in classroom before. In this report, a blending vedio-animation and HTML browser CAI called ”uDounle-WWW”v in CD media will be showed. The program”¦s title comes from two reasons (1) the main frame of this CAI program is translated from some components of the World Weather Watch (WWW) Program under World Meteorological Organization and (2) the browser environment in this program is made as a WWW site pattern. Through CD media and CD-R production, one CAI program could be constructed and maintained easily by teachers in campus and is attractive to students.
”@”@Several tools of making animation are introduced in the next section, and the Double-WWW CAI program are showed in section three. ”@
